Myasthenia Prize 2007 goes to the Marburg physician Dr. Björn Tackenberg

"Clonal expansion" in myasthenia gravis discovered.

Dr. Björn Tackenberg receives the Junior Prize of the German Muscular Dystrophy Association (DGM) donated by Temmler Pharma.

The Junior Prize donated by Temmler Pharma was awarded during the course of the German Muscular Dystrophy Association's convention in Freiburg on March 2, 2007. The prize, which was valued at € 2,500.--, is awarded to the Marburg physician, Dr. Björn Tackenberg, neurological specialist at the University Clinic Marburg, for his work on "Clonal expansions of CD4 + B-helper T cells in autoimmune myasthenia gravis“ published in the European Journal of Immunology (Volume 37, edition 3, p. 849-863).

The award ceremony took place during the opening of the DGM convention. In her opening speech, the wife of the federal president, and patron of the national organisation for rare disorders, ACHSE (Allianz chronisch seltener Erkrankungen), honoured DGM's work, also acknowledging the good work of young physicians in particular, who frequently and significantly contribute to a better understanding of rare disorders.

Together with the clinician Professor Dr. Norbert Sommer, Dr. Björn Tackenberg, who studied and has been working in Marburg as neurological specialist since 2006, presides over the project team "Clinical Neuroimmunology" at the University Clinic Marburg managed by Professor Dr. Wolfgang H. Oertel. Dr. Björn Tackenberg has already been awarded several other prizes, one of them the Scientific Paper Award in 2002 by the European Neurological Association (ENS), and the Poster Prize of the German Neurological Association (DGN) in 2005.

The Myasthenia Prize is the only prize in the German-speaking region awarded to scientists for their research work in the field of myasthenia gravis.

Scientists can again apply for the prize in 2008. Outside recommendations are also possible. Nominated performances are evaluated by the Executive Board of the DGM.
